New Progress in Research on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships

This presentation showcases six recent papers on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) led by Dr Chia-Hsun Chang. Key studies include a Bayesian Network-based risk assessment highlighting human error, collision risks, and cyber threats as major hazards; an analytical review of COLREG compliance and autonomous collision avoidance; and an evaluation of passenger acceptance of autonomous ferries. Two additional papers examine the essential skills and competencies required for MASS operators, while another explores the use of blockchain to enhance maritime cybersecurity. The studies collectively advance safer, socially accepted, and cyber-resilient MASS operations. The ongoing FAVOR MSCA project (2026–2030) is also introduced.

同时担任Maritime Policy & Management(MPM)和Cleaner Logistics and Supply Chain(CLSCN)副主编,以及Maritime Business Review(MABR)客座编辑。

Dr Chia-Hsun Chang is Reader in Maritime Logistics at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Before joining LJMU, he was an Assistant Professor at Chung-Ang University in South Korea and a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He obtained his PhD in Maritime Management from Plymouth University. His research interests include maritime management, risk management, logistics management, Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), and maritime cybersecurity. He has published more than 80 academic outputs, including 41 high-quality journal papers and 43 international conference papers. Dr Chang has completed 12 research grants, mainly in MASS and maritime cybersecurity. His EU MSCA SE project “FAVOR” (€1.18 million) will start in June 2026 and run until 2030. He has successfully supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers and 3 PhD students at LJMU, and is currently supervising 7 PhD students. Dr Chang also serves as an Associate Editor of Maritime Policy & Management (MPM) and Cleaner Logistics and Supply Chain (CLSCN), as well as a Guest Editor of Maritime Business Review (MABR).
